Chemical peels (chemexfoliation) for skin resurfacing:

FAQ
Before And After Pictures

Chemical peels, also known as chemexfoliation or derma-peeling, are a technique used to improve the appearance of the skin. In this treatment, a chemical solution is applied to the skin, which causes it to "blister" and eventually peel off. The new, regenerated skin is usually smoother and less wrinkled than the old skin. The new skin also is temporarily more sensitive to the sun.

The Regime:
Glycolic acid peel result in superficial skin injury and are well tolerated - the 'lunchtime' peel. They remove thin lesions on the skin surface, reducing pigment and surface dryness.
1)First the face is thoroughly washed to remove surface oil. Then apply PRE-PEELING CLEANSER 20%- 59ml multidose (15 treatments)
2)The peeling agent (GLYCOLIC ACID GEL 50% -59ml multidose (ph 1.6) (Phytic acide 5%/Kojic Acide 5%) 25 treatments or A TCA CHELATED LOTION 20%- 60ml multidose (10 treatments) is a light-medium peel)is then applied for several minutes. It stings - how badly and for how long depends on the chemical, its concentration, whether you've had pre-treatment with aspirin, and individual factors. A fan can help. The peel is then neutralised, (NEUTERALIZER FOR GLYCOLIC ACIDE GEL PEEL 59ml multidose (20 treatments)and MOISTURIZING CREAM-40mg is applied to the treated area; the burning sensation lessens. For Glycolic Acid peels there may be a transient pink discolouration which quickly returns to "normal" colour. Occasionally very slight flaking in a few localised areas are seen for 1-2 days. Do not expect the skin to really peel. For TCA the skin may turn brown, feel dry, flake and peel for a few days.
You can have chemical peels done at home if done properly using the strengths I have mentioned. For Gyycolic Acid peels you can return to work after the procedure without having to miss any time from work.It is always better to protect the sensitive treated skin area from the direct rays of the sun and by applying EXTREME SUNSCREEN-40mg to the area till all traces of redness have resolved. To maintain the effect of depigmentation of lesions inbetween treatment you are advised to apply YELLOW CREAM DEPIGMENTATING -15ml Treats all kinds of hyperpigmentation (suitable all skins).

Other necessary information to help you:

About TCA peel: This peel uses trichloroacetic acids or TCAs (which are stronger than glycolic acids and penetrate deeper) to gently remove the outer layers of the skin. Because it penetrates the dermis, or middle skin layer, this peel actually restores the lower collagen and elastin layers of the skin. During the 15-minute procedure, the patient feels a burning sensation. TCA is a self-regulating acid which typically stops working after 5 - 8 minutes. However, we do recommend the neutralizing solution of baking soda and water (Baking soda, tepid water for neutralization -2 tbsp of baking soda mixed with 1 cup water) to ensure complete neutralization at any time during the process. If the burning from the product is too much for you, neutralize with the baking soda recipe provided above. Once the acid is off the skin, the burning sensation will stop.
There will be moderate discomfort and swelling for about a week, and minimal scabbing, which will last for a few days. Healing and toughening of the 'renewed' layer of skin takes place for a few weeks following a TCA peel, but most patients look presentable enough to return to their normal activities after about a week.

Good for: Early wrinkling, mild scarring and age spots on the face and hands. It also helps counteract moderate sun damage, uneven pigmentation and weathered skin.

Drawbacks: While new skin is noticeably fresher and smoother following a TCA peel, anyone considering this procedure must be prepared for some discomfort and a week or more of hibernation. As with any strong acid or laser peel, there's a risk of scarring and the treated areas of the face may turn a whitish colour.

GENERAL INFORMATION:

Cautions:

--Do not use these products if you are currently using Accutane,
or have used Accutane anytime within the last 24 months, as scarring may result.
--Do not use a TCA peel if you have herpes simplex.
--Do not use if you are pregnant.
--Do not use if you are lactating.
--Do not use if you tend to keloid.
--Do not use if you are undergoing chemotherapy or radiation.
--Do not use if you are HIV positive or have AIDS.
--Don't apply the TCA to areas where you have used hair removal products, have shaved, or used granular exfoliation products or buffing pads for several days pre-peel. We need non-irritated skin for best results. Don't resume these products for 2 weeks post-peel.

FAQ

Q- What must I do after a peel?

A- Wash your face as usual but use a gentler cleanser.
You may be asked to use a moisturing and nutralising cream as prescribe.
Do not apply any skin medication or glycolic acid product again immediately during the entire time of healing or the skin will become irrtiated.
Avoid sun exposure. Use a sunblock beginning on the day after you have done the peel.
Do not peel, prick, scrape or scratch the skin at any time.

Q- How many treatment sessions do I need?

A- To get best results peels have to be repeated. Most patients require 2-4 peels at 2-4 weeks intervals. In between peels apply YELLOW CREAM DEPIGMENTATING -15ml Treats all kinds of hyperpigmentation (suitable all skins).
After the initial series, periodic maintenance treatments (from once a month to once every three months) are often recommended.

Q- What are the possible complications of chemical peels and what to do if complications develop?

A- For the Gylcolic Acid peels crusted scabs may be seen if not treated appropriately. This could become infected and possibly lead to a scar. Contact the doctor's office if any crusted scabs form.
The skin should look and feel completely normal within 3 or 4 days (for Gylcolic Acid/AHA peels). If not contact your doctor.
Persistent pain developing after the peel. This may be
reactivation of cold sores. See your doctor immediately.
See your doctor if blisters appear.
Skin infections are uncommon complications. These are seen as painful red areas often with scabs.
Allergic reactions to medication are seen as persistent, itchy and painful rash.
Scars.
Persistent areas of increased/decreased pigmentation.
Antibiotics agents may be recommended after deeper peels. Superficial peels result in mild facial redness and occasional swelling which usually resolve within 48 hours. The peeling is similar to sunburn. Most people can continue their normal activities. Make-up can be applied a few hours after the procedure. Moderate depth peels result in intense inflammation and swelling, which resolve within a week. The peeling is more marked. Mild redness can persist for several weeks. Most people take a week off from work after a moderate depth peel.Post-peel, your skin will continue to improve for 14-21 days as cell turnover takes place and your skin returns to a normal pH level. Thus, our recommendation to wait 2-3 weeks between peels when using our stronger products.

All complications are rare if common hygiene and the proper strength of medication is adhered to, prompt recognition and treatment is necessary to prevent scars if there is any sign of injection.

I would advise you to provide the following to be on the safe side pre treatment:

--Petroleum jelly, an anti-biotic ointment, and an anti-itch cream such as Vaseline (petroleum jelly), Bacitracin or Neosporin (anti-bacterial creams) and Lorandine C or Dexamethasone (anti-itch) are recommended.
--An accurate kitchen timer.
--Q-tips.
--Baking soda, tepid water for neutralization. (2tbsp of baking soda mixed with 1 cup water)

Q- How will my skin look after a chemical peel?

A- When your skin has completely finished peeling, you will immediately notice the dramatic results of your newly improved complexion. Your skin's appearance will continue to improve for the next 4 to 6 weeks, becoming firmer, clearer, smoother, healthier and more youthful looking.
