- Phosphatidylcholine is the chief component of soy lecithin. Lecithin is a natural enzyme that breaks down fat.

- 'Phosphatidylcholine' has/is been used extensively all over the World for it's Cholesterol lowering effect and its action as a 'Liver protective'; it is 'RECENTLY', also being widely used by 'Plastic Surgeons and Cosmetologists' to reduce localised accumulations of unsightly fat and cellulite through injections due to it's fat dissolving effect. This procedure, called 'Lipodissolve', is an alternative to surgical liposuction. For a detailed review of the Pharmacological actions, uses etc of Lipostabil/Essentiale303 (Phosphatidylcholine), please read the section below.
- Men and women are clamouring for treatment !
The cosmetic use of Lipostabil (phosphatidylcholine) originated in Italy. Its first use for such purposes was reported by an Italian physician named Sergio Maggiori, at the Fifth International Meeting of Mesotherapy in 1988, held in Paris, France. He presented his work with phosphatidylcholine in the treatment of xanthelasmas (small soft yellow fatty accumulations at the eyelids).
It took Brazilian dermatologist, Patricia Rittes, widely credited with pioneering the reincarnation of the drug in the mid 1990s as a pathway to physical perfection with her publication of the use of phosphatidylcholine to help reduce fat pads beneath the eyes.
Phosphatidylcholine has been used in Europen 'Mesotherapy' for the procedure of 'Lipodissolve' successfully, for the past fifteen years. Prominent fat pads under the eyes give people a permanently tired and aged appearance and until now the problem could only be treated with surgical removal (Blepharoplasty); so too are 'love handles' and lower abdominal and upper arm, neck and double chin ungainly fat bulges, which upto now had to be surgically removed either by a face, arm lift, Abdiminoplasty or by Liposuction; with their associated morbidity and mortality rates.

- There is no guarantee that any system of medicine will work in 100% of cases. The chances of success are always greater when performed by an experienced clinician and the patient follows the doctors advice precisely. We hereby present actual case statistics for your perusal.
TREATMENT OUTCOMES STATISTICALLY:

Conclusion 1:
In aesthetic medicine - and especially in the surgical field - there are therapies which present a much greater risk for the patients. As examples of this, I would merely refer to the figures available on the number of serious incidents following liposuction and the frequently unsatisfactory aesthetic results of that therapy.
The NETWORK-Lipolysis has several work groups devoted to achieving improvements in terms of the local side effects such as pain, swelling, redness etc.
Results of lipolysis:
Here, we were first of all interested to determine the satisfaction of the patients:
As the Table above shows, the level of patient satisfaction is very high. This is all the more surprising as lipolysis therapy, unlike surgical procedures, does not produce any immediate effect, but only after 2-3 treatments over a period of up to 6 months. Many patients have in fact confirmed that they find this slower rate of change as positive because they are not confronted with the psychological effects of an abrupt change in their physical appearance.
This subjective opinion can also be confirmed by objective data. It must be acknowledged that the extent of the reduction may differ from region to region. In addition, difficulties exist in measuring the reduction in the facial area as, except for photo documentation, no objective and easy-to-use measuring methods are available for this part of the body.
Conclusion 2:
The therapy is viewed as highly positive by the vast majority of patients.
A reduction is achieved in 93% of all cases, whereby with growing experience of the treating physicians, the non-responder rate decreases still further.
A work group of the Network has been set up to investigate the reasons for non-response; this has already succeeded in producing further improvements in the results.
Summary:
Injection lipolysis can produce a sometimes huge improvement in body sculpture. According to our present state of knowledge, it is a safe and gentle method, for both patient and physician, for eliminating smaller accumulations of fat at problem zones. It is no substitute for surgical intervention in the case of more extensive body areas, and is also no therapy for weight reduction. Injection lipolysis should always only be performed by physicians who have undergone training in its proper application.

- Injections can be uncomfortable and the duration of treatment depends on the area treated and the skill of the injector. We have seen various websites quoting a wide range of anywhere between 2 and 10 separate treatment procedures required in order to achieve a result, spaced at 3–10 weekly intervals. It appears that most patients experience a slight burning or tingling sensation straight after injections into the affected area which last for about 15–30 minutes. Redness or slight swelling may occur at the site for about 72 hours with some associated temporary bruising. Results can be visible within 2 weeks of treatment and it appears that more than 80% of patients are very satisfied with the progress of the results after 2–3 treatments.
Some websites claim that :
“Once the fat has been “dissolved” the effect is permanent, however it is up to the patient to ensure that new fat deposits are not allowed to build up through poor diet and insufficient exercise”.
Injections can be applied to the face for facial contouring, eye bags, chin area and so on. Equally, larger areas can be treated such as thigh, hip, stomach, upper arms and knees etc.

-
Lipodissolve injections should not be regarded as a new miracle drug for weight reduction. However in the case of fat deposits which cannot be removed by diet or exercise then lipodissolve injections are effective. They do this by helping the natural metabolic process during which fat is melted away and then eliminated from the body. The medication is directly injected into the area concerned.
For those who find liposuction “too much”, or those who have already had liposuction, and now find fat depositing in other areas as well as cellulite that’s worse than before, non-invasive Liposuction, for fat loss and body contouring is the perfect answer. This enzyme was developed as an injection into the blood stream for the reduction of fat deposits in blood vessels.
Several years ago a cosmetic dermatologist discovered that if you inject the enzyme into an area of fat deposit, the fat could be dissolved away. These areas need multiple injection sessions to achieve desired results.

- The only large trial that we could find was the study mentioned above involving 213 patients, published in the Journal of Drugs and Dermatology in October 2003.
Volunteers received phosphatidylcholine injections in several different areas of localized fat deposits, (thighs, hips, abdomen, flanks and/or the chin region of the face). The patients were submitted to 1 to 5 treatment sessions with an average interval of 15 days between each session. At each treatment session, digital photographs were taken of the patient's front view, back view, and profile, according to the area to be treated. In some patients the thickness of the fatty pad was measured with a specific ruler. Various laboratory tests were also carried out on the volunteers during the treatment with phosphatidylcholine.
Clinical results showed that phosphatidylcholine was effective in reducing the fatty pads in the treated areas, with few side effects. From the authors' point of view, they stated that the off-label use of phosphatidylcholine in the treatment of fatty pads and small areas of localized fat is safe, low cost, and effective. They also stated that, as with any other medications, it needs wide investigation for new treatment uses and long-term studies, so that the recommended dose and safe application technique can be standardized
- Mesosculpting is the answer to the question that so many people have been asking: Is it possible to get rid of fat without having some kind of invasive procedure? For those who find liposuction "too much", Lipodissolve/mesotherapy for fat loss and body contouring is absolutely the answer. For those patients who have already had liposuction and now find fat depositing in other areas as well as cellulite which has become worse, Lipodissolve therapy is the answer.

- Lipodissolve has overwhelming positive reports that should deem it an interesting alternative for some patients seeking non-invasive body contouring. Lipodissolve does not replace lipoplasty, but can certainly complement lipoplasty. The main reason to prefer lipodissolve to surgical procedures is (1) patient safety and (2) better long-term results.
Lipodissolve has several positive aspects worth to look into in comparisement with liposuction:
• Lipoplasty can cause permanent damage to fat cells and nerve damage; this has not been reported in any lipodissolve procedures.
• Lipoplasty can cause infections and bleeding, leading to death; lipodissolve has extremely rare cases of infection and no reports of bleeding or deaths.
• Future weight gain after liposuction can appear as disproportionate; future weight gain from lipodissolve is distributed evenly without 'bumps' or waves.
• Permanent damage from liposuction can cause structural damage to the mesoderm that appear as cellulite, skin irregularity or waviness of the skin surface; no structural damage or irregularities have been reported with lipodissolve.
• Some reports claims that liposuction cause more deaths per percentage than car accidents (one per 5,224 patients in 2000, or 0.5%. Grazer report); not one single death case has been reported from lipodissolve use in any country from thousands of cases. Recent reports from Europe state that every 9th lipoplasty procedure is a failure with some form of disadvantage or unsatisfactory results.
The downside with Lipodissolve compared to surgical procedures are mainly that effect is gradual and the process take several weeks to show final results. Also, lipodissolve on some body-types may give lesser end results, although this is a very small percentage of patients.

- Phosphatidylcholine breaks down the bonds in fat cells. This fat dissolves into liquid and is eliminated from the body in urine and faeces. Treatments can be performed every two weeks.
An entirely nonsurgical method, LipoDissolve makes use of a regular Tuberculin syringe with a fine Gauge 3 needle (the kind used for injecting pimples) that is filled with Lecithin and an enzyme called Phosphatodyl Choline. The solution is injected into parts of the body with considerable fat deposits, which are then broken down and released through sweat, urine or feces, over a period of two weeks.
At the end of the fortnight, an inch should be lost in the treated area. Follow up sessions are carried out for areas with larger fatty deposits in order to achieve the desired size, since the allowable amount of LipoDissolve per treatment is limited to 20cc.
“Lecithin and Phosphatodyl Choline are what you would find in the bile produced by the gall bladder, that is responsible for breaking down fats in our body,”. “This is why the treatment has no side effects because it is actually what happens inside the body.” The advantage of LipoDissolve, meanwhile is that it is directly injected into the affected fatty area, therefore speeding up the process of fat loss.

- Most patients do not need blood tests to start either Lipodissolve or mesotherapy. If your initial consultation with me points to the possibility of an underlying metabolic disorder that might make your mesotherapy less effective, I will suggest that blood tests be performed. There are too many metabolic disorders to cover comprehensively but let’s touch on a few of the more common ones. If you have any family members with diabetes and you are experiencing excessive drinking, eating or urinating you may have diabetes, and you doctor knows which tests to order for that. If you are experiencing fatigue, weight gain, dry skin or brittle hair you may be suffering from hypothyroidism and a TSH (Thyroid Stimulating Hormone level) should be ordered. If you are obese (BMI >30) you are very likely to have insulin resistance and the tests mentioned above as well as a HgbA1c may be worthwhile. If your BMI is less than 30 and you don't have any of the symptoms mentioned above you probably don't need any bloodwork done.

- No actual resting is needed after treatment.
- No specific advice is usually given, apart from some involving your general lifestyle and dietary changes. Occasionally your practitioner may recommend the use of elastic bandages in the treated area to help improve treatment results. You should, however, contact your practitioner immediately if you notice any signs extreme pain or excessive inflammation in the area treated.
- Lipodissolve is an innovative application of mesotherapy that specifically targets localized fat and cellulite deposits. The treatment slowly dissolves the deposits with injections of fat-dissolving substances. The body naturally eliminates the residue after a lipodissolve session over the following three to four weeks. Side effects can include mild swelling, bruising, discomfort, or itching. Mesotherapy is the practice of using microinjections of conventional or
homeopathic medication and/or vitamins into the "mesoderm," or middle layer of skin, to deliver healing or corrective treatment to a specific area of the body. The technique was pioneered in France by Dr. Michel Pistor and has been performed there since 1952. The French Academy of Medicine gave mesotherapy formal recognition in 1987 and it is taught in French medical schools. France currently has more than 15,000 physicians practicing mesotherapy. The procedure has spread throughout Europe and South America , but has only recently begun to attract practitioners and clients in the United States . Mesotherapy has been used in the treatment of acne, arthritis and joint problems,
and sports injuries, as well as for cosmetic purposes, such as reducing cellulite and fat. While each mesotherapy treatment may involve hundreds of small injections, the treatment sessions typically take only minutes to complete .

- Fine needles are used to help keep any pain – which is generally only minor and short lived – to a minimum.
Possible side-effects are itching and small bruises which vanish in a few days, and a little swelling in the injected area which remains for about 12 - 36 hours. Any pain is usually effectively managed with painkillers such as paracetamol. Some individuals may experience an allergic reaction to the products used, although this is a rare occurrence, and very occasionally a haematoma can develop (a swelling beneath the skin filled with blood).

- Typically, after your first mesotherapy session you can expect dime-sized bruises at 5-10 injection sites. These typically resolve in 5-7 days if you don't use any Arnica or Vitamin K gel. With subsequent sessions the bruising becomes less and less as your body gets used to the therapy. Most patients have 2 to 4 small bruises after each session.
I always advise patients to apply Arnica or Vitamin K gel several times a day before and after the mesotherapy. This not only reduces the amount of bruising that occurs in the first place, it also makes bruises resolve twice as fast.
Fortunately, bruising is not a big concern for most patients because pants or shorts can conceal the most popular treatment areas easily.
The worst bruising I have ever seen occurs in patients who take daily doses of aspirin, ibuprofen, high dose vitamin E or garlic supplements or patients who have bruised easily all their lives. Many herbal supplements have anticoagulant properties. These patients can expect bruising at about 15-40% of the injection sites. These patients are excellent candidates for topical Arnica or Vitamin K gel therapy.

- Among the many factors that are making lipodissolve and mesotherapy so popular are:
- safety: there is no need for a general anaesthetic
- ease: pain is easily managed during and after the procedure
- control: Lipodissolve can be fine tuned over the course of treatment
- appearance: there is minimal bleeding and bruising with no sutures needed
- speed: Lipodissolve has a relatively short recovery period, allowing a rapid
- return to work and normal activities; no hospital stay is required
- cost: Lipodissolve has a substantially lower cost than other methods of fat
removal
Lipodissolve is now being used to help improve cosmetic irregularities which can occur after liposuction and it has been shown to improve the skin texture in cellulite.

- No, the dissolved fat has not been reported to return. But new weight gain can build up new fat in the same areas. Exercise and diet in addition to lipo-dissolve treatment has shown extended long-term results. Phosphatidylcholine injections are not a substitute to diet and expercise or fat loss solution for highly obese persons. Although Lipodissolve is successfully used by physicians properly trained and licensed, the therapy is still in early stages of complete clinical reports of its accuracy.

- Phosphatidylcholine will dissolve the fat cell. The fat is eliminated from the body via urination. However, with weight gain new fat can reappear. A balanced diet along with regular exercise is recommended.Micro-injections are given twice a week over a period of 4 to 8 weeks. Some individuals may require a course of 4 weeks, although a full treatment course takes 8 weeks. The treatment is long lasting. When the desired effects are achieved, we recommend yearly maintainance over a 4-6 week period.

- The following areas that can be treated are: abdomen, arms, thighs, knees, saddlebags, flanks, and lower eyelids. A topical numbing cream is applied to the area and after 30 minutes multiple tiny injections of lipostabil are given into the fat.In the area of injection you will feel a slight burning sensation for a short period of time. For the next several days the area will be swollen, bruised and slightly tender. After two weeks you can have the same area injected. To achieve maximum results, an area will need three to six sessions
Spot ReductionAreas suitable for treatment are:
Face
tear sacs
double chin
cheeks
Body
buttocks / upper leg adiposity
inner thigh
lower buttocks / transition to thigh
love handles (particularly in men)
hips
upper and lower belly
fat bulges at shoulder-arm-joints
upper arm
knees
dorsal areas
Treatment of cellulitis
thighs
Lipoma
(fatty lumps anywhere)
The number of treatments differs from person to person, depending upon body region and body size. Due to the differing structure of the connective tissue and fat cells, it has been found that men do not respond to the therapy as well as women.
We have found that more than 80% of the patients are very satisfied with the results after 2 – 3 treatments.

- Lipodissolve continues to be used succesfully in South America and Europe since the advent of the procedure in the nineties. Doctors in the US have taken up the procedure and soon, 'Lipodissolve' will become more widespread in the Asia Pacific Region.

- Be that as it may, we now know how lipolysis injection works using phosphatidylcholine (PHC) and a number of previously theoretical suppositions have now been proven in both practise and experimentally.
That has remained an unanswered question so far. The division of Dermatology, University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) has published a study, according to which, the three cell-dissolving substances phosphatidycholine as such and the solvent deoxycholate and the 3% benzylalcohol constituent contained in it, each possesses the ability to dissolve cell walls. Desoxychol acid is also able to dissolve muscle cells (must therefore not be injected into the muscular system by any means). Phosphatidylcholine from compounding firms in the USA contains a higher concentration of deoxylcholate, while the Brazilian phosphatidylcholine, on the other hand, contains a higher concentration of alcohol and deoxycholate.
Clinical trials are now taking place using pure deoxycholate against lipomas and stubborn fibrous fat pads in which, of course, the minimalization of pain and other side-affects come foremost in our research.
So much for the bursting of fat cells.
- The lipases released from the adipocytes by means of phosphatidylcholine produce a local breakdown of fat that is then discharged over the liver and metabolized via beta-oxidation.The relatively rapid dissolving of fat is to be attributed to the lipases indicated by PHC which is responsible for the breakdown of the triglycerides into tiny nano-fat particles. Mainly responsible for this is the triacylglycerol lipase and the hormone sensitive lipase whose intracellular secretion is greatly stimulated by PHC. Following the addition of PHC, there is also a great increase in the basolateral secretion of apolipoprotein B in lipoprotein particles (LDL, VLDL but also HDL). Thus, PHC plays a vital role in the activation of the lipoprotein lipasis, in steering the lipolysis and finally in lipid absorption. Furthermore, it is interesting to note that in experiments a concentration of at least 250µMol had to be reached in order to achieve an effect. Obviously, a critical all or nothing concentration of PHC is required by the membrane proteins in order to stimulate lipoprotein secretion. (If the two unsaturated fatty acids in PHC are replaced by palmitin acid no effect on apoB- or triacylglycerol transport can be determined). These concentration phenomena could also constitute a hypothesis for our own now very rare non-responder. (Article no. 314 in the Biochemical Journal, 569-575, Great Britain – phosphatidylcholine increases the secretion of triacylglycerol-rich lipoproteins by CaCo-2 cells).
Furthermore, I would like to inform you about an interesting series of ultrasonic experiments. It has been possible to show how the subcutaneously injected PHC spreads like a table-tennis ball in tissue, how it actually dissolves the fatty tissue and that the infiltrate remains visible for eight weeks. In this way the last prophets of doom with their “don`t know how it works” will be silenced.
So, forget using only Deoxycholate; some colleagues will just simply not listen and won`t be told anything, and this is then reflected in their (un)successful treatment. There are always colleagues who want to jump on the bandwagon and who think they can apply lipolysis without any training, just because they have heard something about it from Brazil. Some of them then even pass on these useless methods on to others and are then surprised when they are not successful. It`s not as easy as it first seems. Apart from a very few exceptions, I can say with complete confidence that those who are not successful are quite simply doing something wrong!! There is either something wrong with their choice of patients, they are not injecting enough PHC, possibly injecting it in the wrong place, they don`t keep to the right injection depth or to the right time intervals. In the meantime I have seen this with a number of colleagues who have complained about a reduced effect in their patients and then, after following advice, report that these same patients have reacted very well.
- 'Phosphatidylcholine' is made from a natural enzyme. However, in rare instances, side effects may occur. These side effects may include local pain, temporary bruising, itching and soreness for 1-2 days. Clinics administrating 'Phosphatidylcholine' are extremely pleased with the results and its safety. Long term side effects are unknown at this point. Lipodissolve injections should be used under doctor's supervisions. Persons who are diabetic, pregnant, highly obese, on medication, suffering a diagnosed illness, or allergic to the product should not have Lipodissolve injections.

- Although lipodissolve injections have not yet been officially approved as a therapy, this should be regarded as a general risk, in common with many other treatments that are given without official approval. In aesthetic medicine, for instance, a particular popular treatment for millions of patients has been given without official approval over many years. This is of course, Botulinus toxin injections (Botox) which is used world wide in aesthetic medicine. The substance was used for other medical applications and has not yet been approved by the authorities for the aesthetics. Although there have been delays in the manufacturers achieving full approval for these treatments for cosmetic indications, they have been widely used without significant problems. In the case of Lipostabil health risks have not been observed by either Dr. Rittes nor by other eminent practitioners. The active substance itself and its elimination from the body via metabolism have been fully investigated and documented, and have revealed no serious problems.
It should be noted that almost every patient shows some temporary side-effects after treatment including reddening, swellings and muscular aching and – in some cases – haematoma (bruising). After a few days, however, any discomfort at the treated region will have disappeared.
Fat deposits are anesthetized locally using a cream and disinfected. The physician then injects the active substance using very fine needles.
The main point in achieving a fine, smooth result is the special injecting technique. A special technique and an artistic eye are necessary.
After completion of the injections, the patient goes home. Further medication is usually not required.

All patients should expect the following (usually minor) symptoms for around 72 hours following injection.
- Reddening
- Swelling / Bruising
- Burning / Itching
- Muscular aching
Expected Side Effects: Facial Treatments
Facial Swelling
- Is noticeable following Injection circa 7days
- Requires adjustment of lifestyle and social activities
- A single dose of Non-Steroidal Anti-inflammatory Drugs may help muscle ache
- Severe allergy is very rare – but may require i.v. steroids.
Possible Side Effects:
- Permanent Reddening of Skin
- Nodule formation – disappears after 2 months / rarely permanent
- Temporary Circulatory Problems at time of injection – fainting sickness sweating
- Temporary Diarrhoea following treatment – bowel excretes fat
- Allergy – like nettle rash
- Intermenstrual Bleeding - fat cells release oestrogen

- Adults between the ages of 18 - 75 and in good health are candidates for Mesotherapy for weight loss, spot weight reduction, cellulite reduction, chin/neck and eyelid fat pad reduction.

- If you have any of the conditions listed below, you are not a candidate for aesthetic Mesotherapy: Pregnant or breast feeding, Insulin dependent diabetes, History of recent cancer, History of blood clots, On blood thinning medications, On multiple heart medications, History of severe heart disease, History of heart arrhythmias, History of stroke. One thing, persons with polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS, PCOD, Stein-Leventhal Syndrome) should avoid mesotherapy all together, as there have been unpredictable reactions in patients with this diagnosis.
Individuals with a known hypersensitivity to any component of the formulation.
People with active kidney or hepatic disease, thyroid disease, moderate to severe loose skin or flaccidity, and the presence of fibrosis or adherence in the areas to be treated.
Lipodissolve treatment is possible for the following groups of patients, but must be carried out with additional safeguards.....:
• Autoimmune Disease
• Serious Liver / Kidney Disease
• Gross Obesity BMI > 30
• Allergies / Hypersensitivity to Phosphatidylcholine / Soya Bean
• Bleeding Disorders
• Menstrual Abnormalities
You must declare any of the above to your surgeon, for him to investigate you further and if necessary take additional safe guard measures during treatment!
- Treatments of 25 to 100 injections are generally given once a week over a period of 4 - 10 weeks. It’s virtually pain-free with no recovery time. Practitioners say most patients see good results within 4 weeks, although some will continue the therapy for up to 10 weeks. As long as clients continue to follow their diet, the results should be permanent.

- 'Phosphatidylcholine' has been used intravenously since the 50's in cardiac related illnesses to reduce cholesterol and plaque. These procedures involve much higher dosage than lipodissolve procedures. Medical research has not reported any 'dissolving' of organs from phophatidylcholine. Cosmetic surgeons are very pleased with Lipodissolve results. Patricia Rittes, Sao Paulo, Brazil and Tatiane Kitamura, specialist Brazilian Society of Dermatologoy, have been using Lipodissolve injections since 1995. Neither have reported any adverse reactions from their clients.

- No, this has not been known at all with proper procedures. Injections are to be done in small distances apart and in limited doses per treatment. The timeframe between treatments combined with the small doses per session provide the physician with ample opportunity to observe and monitor effects or reactions.

- Lipodissolve is the perfect option for those who do not want to undergo sugery. The procedure will sculpt specific areas of the body like the stomach area, upper arms, thighs, chin, hips, etc.

The Medical Term For Cellulite is Dermatomyoliposclerosis (DMLS)
- Lipodissolve has been shown to improve and smoothen out the skin.It stimulates the mesoderm, or middle layer of the skin. This in turn helps to dispurse cellulite.
What is Mesotherapy? (click here for detailed information)
is the most effective and long lasting treatment for cellulite available. Liposuction makes cellulite worse. Endermologie works, but never lasts. More than 90 percent of women are affected by cellulite. This condition is a disfiguring source of shame and embarrassment that literally affects a person's confidence and overall sense of well being. Before Mesotherapy came to the United States , there was no cure for cellulite. Fortunately, Mesotherapy has been a safe and successful cellulite treatment in many European and South American countries for years. There are numerous causes of cellulite, including: 1. Poor circulation 2. Defective connective tissue 3. Enlarged fat cells 4. Poor diet and nutrition habits
Cellulite, a combination of fluid retention and fatty tissue, is typically a female problem. Ninety-five percent of women are said to suffer from it, and it can affect all women irrespective of their weight. In women, fat cells on the lower part of the body store fat 6 times more readily than those on the upper body. They also release them 6 times less readily. This makes weight loss from the lower body almost impossible without the upper body suffering unnecessarily.
Cellulite appears in the subcutaneous level of skin tissue. Fat cells are arranged in chambers surrounded by connective tissue called septae. As water is retained, fat cells held within the perimeters of this area expand and stretch the connective tissue. Eventually this connective tissue contracts and hardens (sclerosis) holding the skin at a non-flexible length, while the surrounding tissue continues to expand with weight, or water gain. This results in areas of the skin being held down while other sections bulge outward, resulting in the lumpy, 'cottage-cheese' appearance. Cellulite affects over 90% of all post-pubescent women, regardless of their weight or age!!
Cellulite is the bumpy, unsightly skin and tissue commonly found on upper thighs and lower buttocks. The medical name for cellulite is: Dermatomyoliposclerosis (DMLS). The lumpy and dimpled appearance that usually appears, is the result of connective tissue bands (septae) that holds down areas of the skin, trapping the fat, while other areas bulge outwards and hereby create the undesirable “cottage-cheese” appearance.
Cellulite is a four-stage process, with slow progression over a lifetime. The initial change is a deterioration of the dermal vasculature and particularly the loss of capillary networks. This is due to fat cells clumping together and decreasing venous return, or simply put: poor blood circulation.
This medical condition has been one of the most difficult to treat and viewed by most women to impact their self image and self esteem. Lipodissolve has been a safe and successful cellulite treatment among European and South American physician practitioners for many years. More recently, it is being acclaimed in American media, as the cellulite cure.
Cellulite knows no boundary of female physique type, afflicting both the slender and overweight, the athletic and sedentary. It is not caused by being overweight but is seen more severely in obese individuals and more widespread. Cellulite forms when defective connective tissue bands retract the skin and become stretched by enlarged bulging fat cells. This structural disruption micro-scars (sclerosis) at inflexible shortened lengths. Cellular water is retained, lymphatic flow restricted, and fat cells expand and stretch. Eventually, this results in the lumpy 'cottage-cheese' dimpled appearance. Causative factors include poor redundant circulation, inherently defective connective tissue, and enlarged adipose fat cells. Contributing factors may include the weight-gain of pregnancy and the challenges of consistent healthy nutrition and diet habits. The medical term for Cellulite is Dermatomyoliposclerosis (DMLS), which captions the above process.

- Persons afflicted with cellulite face a dizzying array of options, including topical creams and lotions, massage, and even surgery.
Fortunately Mesotherapy is a safe, effective cure for cellulite and is now available in the United States. Mesotherapy treats three factors involved in cellulite formations: Your doctor creates a specific formula to reduce the fat in your cellulite, improve impaired circulation and break down damaged connective tissues--thereby smoothing the skin's surface and reducing the orange-peel appearance to the skin.
Is Mesotherapy Right For You?
Practitioners of Mesotherapy use a grading system for cellulite as follows:
| 0 |
No dimpled "cottage cheese" is observed, even when skin is pinched |
| 1 |
Pinching produces dimpled skin; not visible otherwise |
| 2 |
Visible dimpled skin on a standing patient; dimpling disappears when patient lies down |
| 3 |
Visibly dimpled skin regardless of patient's body position |
After observing the grade of a patient's cellulite, the Mesotherapist can determine if you are a candidate for Mesotherapy. The treatment goal of Mesotherapy is to get each patient to Grade 1.
- The goal of Grade 1 - no visible cellulite - is achieved through a series of 30 minute office visits with a Mesotheraphy specialist. Once injected, the medications remain active for approximately one week. We recommend weekly Mesotherapy sessions until the cellulite is gone. The "average" patient achieves her goal in 10-15 visits with one to two annual sessions for maintenance.

- This is an excellent question and a matter of some debate. There are some who consider lipodissolve injections to be purely phosphatidylcholine, while mesotherapy combines phosphatidylcholine with other ingredients, such as aminophylline, hyaluronidase, procaine, lidocaine etc. Lipodissolve gives you the benefits of phosphatidylcholine alone while mesotherapy has added ingredients that help to enhance your body's ability to burn rather than store fat. Hyaluronidase enhances the penetration of phosphatidylcholine into the fatty tissues and help break up the tight bands that hold bundles of cellulite together. There is no consensus at this time as to what the best formula is for burning fat or reducing cellulite.

- Women know that cellulite isn't "just fat" because diet and exercise don't get rid of it. Even slim women can have it. So what causes it and what can be done about it?
Estrogen levels begin decreasing in many women by their late 20s. This brings a decrease in blood supply to the skin and fatty tissue under the skin, causes minute breaks in the connective tissue underlying the skin (called fenestrations), and enlarges individual fat cells under the skin. The resulting enlarged fat cells then poke up (or herniate) through the breaks in the connective tissue causing the familiar "dimpled" or "cottage cheese" look to thighs, legs and derriere.
The mesotherapy solutions specifically treat the causes of cellulite. First, circulation of blood to the skin is increased. Next, the dysfunctional and broken connective tissue is cleared. Finally the enlarging fat cells are reduced by delivering specific medication to fat cell receptors that block the fat's entry. At the same time, the receptor that stimulates the fat's exit from the cell is turned on.
The result is much smoother (and smaller) legs, thighs and derriere. Any area of the body can be treated with this technique with dependable results.
CONSULTDRMINAS’s mesotherapy techniques are today's cutting edge treatment for cellulite, as well as body fat reduction in general.
- The Mesotherapy formula is based on the grade and stage of cellulite for the individual patient and the customized blend of medications interact with the fat cells in the following ways:
- Dissolving excess of fat deposit
- Improving blood flow to the area
- Removing fibrotic, hardened connective tissue
- Improving lymphatic drainage
The result is a reduction of the “orange peel” appearance and in loss of fat in the treated areas. Because cellulite is a permanent condition it requires more treatments than fat reduction by itself, usually 10 to 15 treatments or more if the condition is severe.

- Lipodissolve is suitable for men and women who are not excessively overweight, but instead have certain problem areas with stubborn fat that can no longer be reduced by diet and exercise. The abdomen, arms, thighs, knees, saddlebags, wings (the area on the back, just beside the armpits), and the lower eyelids can be treated with Lipodissolve.
It is also the answer to people who have long wanted to undergo liposuction but are too scared to go under the knife; however, for much bigger areas, liposuction is still best. Lipodissolve is perfect for the person who wants to lose that last five pounds on the thighs, stomach or knees.
The treatment has become popular among celebrities. Actresses Patricia Javier and Priscilla Almeda to name a few, have openly talked about undergoing the procedure, expressing total satisfaction.
Another advantage of Lipodissolve is that there is no downtime, pain, if any, is very minimal–just a slight burning sensation for a short period of time–so that patients can go back to work, immediately after treatment.

- If you're wondering about discomfort from mesotherapy, here are some guidelines I've found useful:
1) If you have a high pain tolerance, you may find it minimally uncomfortable.
2) If you have a low pain tolerance, you may benefit from a topical numbing cream that your mesotherapist might prescribe.
3) If a medium pain tolerance, it's a toss-up regarding topical anaesthesia -- your choice.
4) If phosphatidylcholine is being used, expect an itchy/stingy/burning sensation that will reach its peak in about 45 minutes and last about 2 hours or so. At that point, the itchy/stingy sensation goes away to be replaced by a feeling of soreness (if your tummy was done, it will probably feel like you did way too many sit-ups) that will last for 2-4 days, depending on its concentration, how close the injections were and the aliquot (amount) injected per injection site.
5) No matter what formula was used, there will be a sort of "reactivation" of the medication following exercise. It may feel itchy/stingy again as circulation increases and more of the medication filters down to the hypodermis underlying the skin.
6) "Spots" (not bruises, but pinkish areas...sometimes a bit raised) usually last about 4 days, but can be longer in some people. These are local areas of medication being absorbed and working in the tissues -- doing what it's supposed to do in other words.
7) Bruises can last 1-3 weeks. Sometimes a bit longer. Many factors influence this: aspirin and its congeners (similar drugs), certain vitamins and herbs, certain topical preparations, diet and heredity as well as specific medical disorders.

- One of the products in many mesotherapy formula -- phosphatidylcholine -- is often injected IV in European countries to break up cardiovascular placque which forms from having hypercholesterolemia. PPC can also have an effect on lowering triglycerides in specific. There are two Russian papers on this, but nothing in English.
However, in general, anything that lowers body mass index (BMI) in patients improves elevated cholesterol levels as well. So the *result* of mesotherapy (not most mesotherapeutic formulae themselves)probably lowers cholesterol modestly in many.

- All products are clearly marked with the manufacturer's information and all arrive in their original sealed boxes.

- The list of substances that might increase bruising is long. One vitamin that can increase it is Vitamin E taken orally. This seems to be dosage related. An herb that can make bruising worse is gingko biloba.

– Well it is difficult to say what is normal or otherwise regards swelling after any trauma, as each of us react differently to the same traumatic insult. One week possibly could be considered within the normal range and more so if the area injected initially was large! I recommend antihistamines like Benadryl at night and Tylenol during the day to help the swelling settle down. Most patients really like a bag of frozen peas (cold compress for the first 24 hrs or so) on the swollen area for about 20 minutes or so. If your doctor says that is ok, it should help. Your swelling should at least slowly be improving every day.

- Some patients do experience post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, usually patients that have darker skin to begin with. Don't worry, it will fade with time. What is frustrating is that it can take some months to fade. Some things that can make it fade faster are keeping affected areas out of the sun/tanning booths and using sunscreen, if you do need to get sun exposure in the areas you got mesotherapy.
Prescription strength 4% hydroquinone and retin-A 0.1% can be applied together to the affected areas twice daily to make them fade faster, but you should not use these products if you are pregnant or breast feeding. The skin can get dry and peely where you apply the retin-A, so if it does just stop for a couple of days, then restart. Prevention can be achieved by treating the entire areas you are going to get mesotherapy done with 4% hydroquinone twice daily for 2 days before your mesotherapy.

- There has been really no research done to study this particular question, but from past experience I have performed mesotherapy on Accutane patients without any problems. The mechanism by which mesotherapy works is different from how Accutane works and thus would not interfere with therapy or side effects.

What is Lipodissolve & Mesotherapy?
- In the United States Lipodissolve is often advertised as being the same as Mesotherapy. European physicians do not mix the two techniques as they differ very much, ex. Botox and Resylane are both based on injections but would not be considered the same therapy. we do not recommend Mesotherapy for face and body sculpting procedures in the United States due to the therapy's slow process to show any visible results and the repeated sessions being expensive. In addition, Meso in the United States involve many mixtures of medications that are not safe. Mesotherapy is useful for various medical conditions where it offers various degrees of relief.
What is Mesotherapy? Where Does Mesotherapy Come From? Is it New?
Mesotherapy was originally pioneered by the French physician, Dr. Michel Pistor in 1945 for the treatment of tinnitus and later for pain, vascular and lymphatic disorders. His first paper was published in 1952.
Mesotherapy is a technique to deliver medications just below the skin surface. While pills expose the entire body to chemical side effects, Mesotherapy is injected only where it is needed. Over the past 50 years, more than 15,000 physicians world-wide have used Mesotherapy for many uses including the treatment of acute and chronic musculoskeletal and rheumatological conditions, as well as sports injuries. Numbers are also increasing in the United States, although still only within 300 physicians.
In 1987, the French Academy of Medicine recognized Mesotherapy as an inherent part of traditional medicine. The International Society of Mesotherapy encompasses 14 countries throughout Europe and South America. Today, Mesotherapy is used all over the world, including the USA, as a safe and effective alternative to surgery in the practice of Cosmetic & Aesthetic Medicine.
Mesotherapy is the practice of using microinjections of conventional or homeopathic medication and/or vitamins into the mesoderm or middle layer of skin to deliver healing or corrective treatment to a specific area of the body. Mesotherapy has been touted as the latest breakthrough in aesthetic medicine for body sculpting, cellulite reduction, and skin rejuvenation. Mesotherapy is also used in Pain Management, Sports Medicine, Sports Injuries and Bone Calcifications.
Using a very fine needle, the specific formula selected to treat the individual patient’s condition, is injected painlessly into the mesoderm (a tissue layer under the skin). The needle penetrates the treated area at only a very small depth. The treatment is performed manually or through a mechanical delivery system called a Meso Gun.
Sometimes a technique called “multi-pricking” is used, where a number of quick, very superficial, injections are done at specific areas. Multi-pricking is performed by hand or by meso-gun.
Mesotherapy has been used in the therapy of:
- Rhumatology
- Sports Traumatology
- Vascular diseases
- Infections diseases
- Aesthetic treatment such as acne, reducing cellulite and weightloss. Mesotherapy can treat certain but not every indication of specialization.
While each mesotherapy treatment may involve hundreds of small injections, the treatment sessions typically take only minutes to complete. Mesotherapy has better use against various diseases than aesthetic procedures.
Some of the drugs mesotherapists inject include vitamins and enzymes, and in some cases aminophylline, an asthma medication, and isopreteranol, a cardiac medicine. Both are FDA-approved, but not for cosmetic use. There is no clinical data on the safety of use from these mixtures.
The number of mesotherapy treatments needed depends on a number of factors: the severity of the condition, the cause of the problem are chief among them. Response to therapy is generally seen after a minimum of five sessions and more. Long-term, chronic conditions such as cellulite and wrinkles, may require repeated sessions yearly. Sports injuries, hairloss therapy and acute conditions may require 15 therapy sessions or more.
The Mesotherapy popular in the United States differ from the Europen method. The European method concentrate on small quantities of medication in many sessions with high safety, while the US method often indicate large amounts of medication for faster results (does not necessary give faster results as advertised) and the use of medication unknown in the European therapy. Consequently this involves a much higher risk for adverse reactions.
Clinical cost of the treatments vary. The clinical cost of supplies for a single session is $40-100 to physicians. Because of cost factor and slow process for results, the therapy is not deemed suitable for aesthetic procedures in the United States. In Europe the patient is charged only $50-75 per session - a fee not possible to imitate in the United States.
- The medications and nutritional supplements that are used in Mesotherapy work to melt the fat beneath the skin and shrink your fat cells by a variety of mechanisms.
Mesotherapy injections generally are a solution of various vitamins, minerals, enzymes, plant extracts, anesthetics, medications and amino acids. The ingredients in the solution depend on your individual treatment needs and the desired effect you want to achieve. BODY SCULPTING
Mesotherapy is a procedure used for weight loss and body sculpting to reduce, eliminate and contour specific undesired fat pockets. this method targets the receptor on fat cells that produce lipogenesis(fat production ) and lipolysis (fat breakdown).Receptors that break down fat are known as beta receptors; those that create fat are alpha receptors. Alpha receptors are stimulated to produce fat when you ingest food containing carbohydrates fats, aminoacids, hormones or alcohol. A medical history and physical examination is required prior to receiving treatment for weight loss and body sculpting. Based on the individual requirements, the doctor selects a formula consisting of several medications that block the alpha-receptors and stimulate the beta-receptors. Once injected into the skin, the formula slowly diffuses into the fat, and breaks down. The number of weight loss and body sculpting treatments required varies from person to person.
Aminophylline is FDA approved as an asthma medication. On the surface of each of your fat cells are Alpha and Beta receptors. Receptors that burn fat are known as Beta receptors, and those that cause fat storage are known as Alpha receptors. An easy way to remember this is that Beta = BURNING and Alpha = ADDING. Above the waist, the number of Alpha and Beta receptors occurs in an equal 1:1 ratio in both women and men. However, below the waist, women have approximately 6 to 8 Alpha receptors to every Beta. This is the reason why it is so incredibly difficult for women to lose weight in this area. Alpha receptors are stimulated by carbohydrates, fat ingestion, amino acids and alcohol. In Mesotherapy, Aminophylline allows your beta receptors to burn your fat more efficiently. To burn fat your Beta receptors must first create a chemical called cyclic AMP which allows a second step to occur. Without mesotherapy, your Beta receptors cannot proceed to the second step because of a chemical called phosphodiesterase. Phosphodiesterase breaks down cyclic AMP and stops fat burning. Aminophylline inhibits phosphodiesterase, preventing it from interfering with the cyclic AMP and fat breakdown.
Phosphatidylcholine (PPC) or Lipostabil is an antioxidant that is derived from natural soy lecithin. It is FDA approved only as a nutritional supplement at this time. PPC alters the metabolism of fatty substances like cholesterol and triglycerides in the body. PPC has been used intravenously to break down fatty deposits (lipolysis) in patients with high cholesterol, fatty liver disease and heart vessels filled with fatty plaques. PPC is purported to penetrate the adipocyte (fat cell) through the double lipid layer (cell wall) where it acts as a detergent (emulsifying and tensoactive agent). This means that fat affected by PPC becomes water soluble. Fat soluble and water soluble substances are not compatible (a good example is oil and water). Therefore your fat cells that are altered by PPC must be eliminated. In a nutshell, PPC breaks down fat much like hot water and dish soap break down grease in a frying pan. The fat dissolves and is carried through the bloodstream and excreted by the kidneys and bowel. It is just common sense that if you are exercising and dieting properly, this process occurs much more rapidly and efficiently.
The FDA recently approved one form of hyaluronidase (Vitrase) as an injectable drug for use in combination with other injected drugs to increase their absorption and dispersion. Cellulite occurs when connective tissue bands that hold down the skin trap bulging bundles of fat and create the "dimpling" effect. Connective tissue contains a large amount of hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronidase is a natural enzyme that breaks down hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronidase used in Mesotherapy may help to break down the connective tissue bands that create the dimpled appearance of cellulite. Hyaluronidase also enhances the absorption and dispersion of PPC to enhance the breakdown of fat cells between the connective tissue bands.
L-Carnitine is FDA approved as a nutritional supplement only. Synthesized by the liver and kidneys, L-Carnitine is required for fatty acids to be delivered into cells where the fat can be burned as a source of fuel. In Mesotherapy, L-Carnitine transports liberated fat into the little power centers of the cells (called mitochondria) so that the fat can be burned for energy. Quite simply, without optimal amounts of L-Carnitine, there is not optimal fat burning taking place in Mesotherapy. Diet and exercise along with L-Carnitine will maximize fat removal.
This is an FDA approved anesthetic that is used in low doses in Mesotherapy to maximize your comfort by blocking pain almost instantly after injection.
MESOTHERAPY TECHNIQUES
Because we take a personalized approach, your Mesotherapy will begin only after a full medical history and a physical examination to pinpoint the areas you want to improve the most. Then a potent triple anesthetic cream is applied to the skin surface to maximize your comfort. Soft soothing music will be playing in the background to put you at ease. Our friendly staff will then apply a topical solution to cleanse your skin of any harmful bacteria. Then, using a very tiny needle (the size of a eyelash), Your doctor injects the medication into your target areas painlessly. This occurs because the tiny needle is specially manufactured to deliver the medicine in a series of painless injections. Patients describe the sensation as a momentary, light pinch. All patients undergoing Mesotherapy will be asked to follow a natural healthy diet that is low in carbohydrates, which will be easy to follow. And because toxins are eliminated, lots of water is used to flush these substances, along with dissolved fat, out of the body. Exercise is needed to circulate the medications used, with either walking or another form of aerobic activity at least three times a week. While vigorous exercise on the day of your mesotherapy is not advised, light exercise such as walking for 15 to 30 minutes is a very good idea. Patients report that the more Mesotherapy sessions they have, the easier the technique becomes. |
Lipodissolve is the non-surgical option to body sculpting and lipoplasty by the practice of injecting safe and beneficient enzymes into the mesoderm (Lipodissolve is not the same as Mesotherapy).
Lipodissolve was pioneered in Italy by Dr. Sergio Maggiori, and was presented at the Fifth International Meeting of Mesotherapy in 1988 in Paris, France. There are several hundred lipodissolve practitioners around the world. There are far fewer practitioners in the United States although numbers are increasing.
Lipodissolve has been used in the treatment of fat dissolve, reduction of cellulite, and for body- and facial contouring [nasolabial folds, eye fat pads, chin, neck, thighs, buttocks, love handles, stomach, upper arms]. The treatment sessions take only minutes to complete and is reported safe with very few adverse side effects compared to the majority of cosmetic medical procedures. The Mesotherapy substances popular in United States is generally not used in Lipodissolve for fat dissolve procedures and have much more risks involved than actual Lipodissolve. Mesotherapy is also a much slower therapy in obtaining good results for fat dissolve than Lipodissolve. Positive results depend on experience and proper training.
One of the main ingredients in lipodissolve is phosphatidylcholine - a soy lecithin in condensed form. Phosphatidylcholine sol. is sold since 1979 in the United States by compounding pharmacist. The most popular trademark for phosphatidylcholine in Europe is 'Aventis Pharmas' Lipostabil/Essentiale - not yet approved in the USA.
The number of lipodissolve treatments needed depends on a number of factors: the severity of the condition, the body structure or fat structure are chief among them. Response to therapy is generally seen after two to four sessions.
Clinical cost of the treatments vary. The price for supplies of a single session cost between $15-$100 to physicians. |

SUMMARY?
- An incredible new discovery to get rid of unsightly, bulging bags under the eyes - without resorting to the surgeon's knife - has taken America by storm. The method is equally successful for the reduction of double chins and the removal of localised, stubborn fat on the waistline, hips, thighs, knees and abdomen.
Lipodissolve (lipostabil) , a treatment pioneered by doctors in South America, is based on a substance made up of Soya oil and originally developed to lower cholesterol levels in the blood. In medicine it is used to fight fat globules without any adverse side effects even at as high a dose as 80ml per session. At a lower dosage, minute drops of Phosphatidylcholine - which has fat dissolving properties - are injected into the lower eyelid area, where it acts to disperse accumulated fat deposits. The result is a significant reduction of the bulge after 2 to 4 treatments. Higher dosages are used to disperse body fat pads.
Clinical trials were carried out over two years on this simple non-surgical procedure, and after successfully completing the required criteria, they were submitted for publication to the Medical Journal USA in 2001. 2000 cases have already been treated in South America without any single adverse effect.
Hailed as one of the most exciting new treatments for years, Lipodissolve does away with the traditional fat vacuum method altogether. Instead, it claims to dispose of those unwanted inches by injecting a drug called lipostabil into the offending bulge. It breaks down the walls of the fatty cells and the waste is then flushed out when you go to the loo. Hailed as one of the most exciting new treatments for years, Lipodissolve does away with the traditional fat vacuum method altogether. Instead, it claims to dispose of those unwanted inches by injecting a drug called lipostabil into the offending bulge. It breaks down the walls of the fatty cells and the waste is then flushed out when you go to the loo.The doctor uses it on the eyes, chin and body and says it’s ideal for smaller areas of fat that won’t shift, but aren’t blubbery enough for surgery.
Mesotherapy was given formal recognition by the French Academy of Medicine in 1987 and was pioneered by Dr. Michel Pistor in 1952. Presently, over 15,000 medical practitioners provide Mesotherapy throughout Europe, Great Britain and South America.
Mesotherapy has been used in the treatment of acne, arthritis and joint problems, sports injuries as well as for cosmetic purposes, such as reducing cellulite and weight loss. While each Mesotherapy treatment may involve hundreds of small injections, the treatment sessions typically take only minutes to complete.
Mesotherapy — over the course of approximately 10 sessions — blocks our ability to store fat and stimulates our ability to burn it up.
While those seeking a sleeker waistline, less of a double chin, or an end to saddlebags will be tempted with this emerging new alternative to liposuction – many clinicians and prospective patients alike will still be concerned about the lack of long term clinical evidence in the use of phosphatidylcholine injections for fat removal or the improvement of cellulite.
History shows us that drug evaluation and approval can take some time in the cosmetic market place. Tretinoin (Retinova®) was only FDA approved as an acne treatment for years before it could claim its wrinkle reducing charms. However, doctors were prescribing it to their creased and lined patients for years before it got the FDA stamp of approval. It also took over 12 years of off label use of Botox® before it got the FDA go-ahead to claim it could tame wrinkles (and it still isn’t licensed in the UK!).
However, the difference is that both Retinova® and Botox® were FDA (and UK ) approved drugs for the treatment of other conditions. Lipostabil® is unlicensed for ANY clinical use in both the US and the UK , and without the backing of the manufacturer it may never achieve an approved status.
This treatment is already being aggressively marketed by some clinics in the UK as Flabjab™ or Lipodissolve and has already been “featured” on Richard & Judy on National Television.
Some consumer e-shop websites are also trying to confuse the public by selling phosphatidylcholine TABLETS claiming that users can take these “without prescription” ,(which is technically true), and benefit from weight loss – we see no evidence for this being true.
Injections of phosphatidylcholine are NOT a replacement for liposuction. They may, however, provide a useful alternative in helping to reduce small areas of “stubborn fat” such as love handles, and fat underneath the chin.
We know some Lipostabil® practitioners do not like to treat eye bags using this procedure, and that probably makes sense as the control over the amount of fat loss could cause a problem here, and reducing fat in this area may ultimately not be a good idea. Many surgeons are now looking to re-position fat in this area rather than remove it when they perform a lower lid blepharoplasty.
So, in conclusion, we shall follow the phosphatidylcholine story with interest as it emerges over the next few years. As the drug is being marketed heavily and we know that a number of established aesthetic clinics are already promoting this product, we have included it in our Mesotherapy Treatment Details section and it is now a searchable treatment within our site.
Lipodissolve, or Lipolysis as it is known in Europe , is a concept which allows physicians to inject mild substances direct into fat to initiate a process when the fat is dissolved from the fat cells without damaging the cells and without any need of surgery. This therapy was initially developed by Italian physicians to reduce cholesterol deposits of the eyelids (Xanthelasma). The idea was later introduced at the 5th International Meeting of Mesotherapy in1988.
The therapy, known as Lipodissolve in English, has undergone tremendous improvements since its initial introduction to the medical community in the 1980’s. “Lipodissolve has improved so much from our trials and studies in Europe that now, many patients get final results even after one single session,” says ASAL’s research director, Dr. Hasengschwandtner, “Previously the same therapy would require anywhere from 8-20 visits.”
The therapy can reduce localized fat on nearly any procedure, often only addressed by surgery. The results on facial procedures in particular are exceptional, and many patients have a drastic improvement from this mild and simple therapy, taking years off the face and rejuvenating the skin and complexion. “In combination with a total makeover, alternated with Botox and Restylane, Lipodissolve can perform wonders without the risks, costs or discomforts of surgery.”

Information about Injection Lipolysis Injections (“Fat-Away Injections“)
What I can confirm:
1) I can certainly confirm the effectiveness of this method.
2) I see lipolyse injections as a very gentle and simple method of making smaller unwanted fat deposits disappear without too much effort and risk to the patient.
3) Lipolyse injections can, in the case of larger fat deposits, certainly not replace liposuction, but can certainly serve as a supplementary method.
4) Phosphatidylcholin is a substance known for many years and its effects have been documented in innumerable articles.
5) The transportation mechanism of fatty substances through protein bodies in the liver and their excretion as bile acid has been dealt with in detail in literature.
6) In mesotherapy these soyalecithines have been administered intracutaneously for some time.
7) Only fat cells are resorbed. An experiment on myself injecting 5 ml. Lipostabil N into my thigh muscles proved both (almost) painless and had no effect.
8) Any side effects as such have been elucidated above and neither I, nor other colleagues who have been administering this treament since the very beginning, have any serous side-effects to report.
9) At this time we have found that there is a non-responder rate of about 5%, (i.e. the therapy does not show any effect in about one in twenty patients). The reasons for this are unknown. You can be absolutely sure that your physician will always be informed about the latest state of development of lipodissolve injections. Further information is available from your own doctor or can be found on this website.
What I can as yet not confirm:
1) Because of the short period of application long-term effects are as yet unknown.
2) After some 9 years of use, the first doctor to use this treatment, Dr. Rittes from Sao Paulo, reports the same results. She began administering the first lipolysen injections in 1995.

Dr. Patricia Rittes, Dermatologist of Brazil
In 1995, Dr. Patricia Rittes a female dermatologist from Brazil began treating patients with a well established liquid lecithin product; phosphatidylcholine, a a chemical produced from the soya bean that has been used therapeutically for 15 years, originally for intravenous treatment of cholesterol level disorders and more recently for injections into fat deposits under the skin.
Although the results were outstanding as it is so often the case with new and simple discoveries, the professional world appeared both critical and sceptical. At the end of 2001, the American Society for Plastic Surgery published a statement arguing that surgical liposuction was the only proven method to reduce fat cells in the long run, and many considered this was based on a fear of losing patients willing to undergo liposuction. Recently, the medical director of a world-famous dermatological hospital of New York published his overwhelming positive results, and this started a world wide increase in investigations relating to this treatment resulting in very encouraging results being reported. (Dr. Soren White, Skinklinic, Upper East Side, NY).
Similar positive results have been reported by a range of treatment centres such as the Advanced Clinical Cosmetology Centre, Harley House, London (Sir Sally Gilbert Wilson), Skin Clinic Tampa/St. Petersburg, USA, Dr. Bayfrom, by Dr. Gunther Seitz – Berlin, Future-Med Aesthetic Center Charlottenstr. 60, and Schlossklinik Abtsee.
In South and Central America there are also numerous institutes working with this technique. Dr. Rittes alone has treated approx. 8,500 patients during the past years without having observed any any side-effects!
In Austria, too, authorities have opposed this therapy initially due to the lack of technical information. The critical issues most frequently addressed by, for instance, the German Society for Plastic Surgery, have been the correct dosage of the pharmaceutical substance and the manner of the disposal or transportation of the dissolved fat. Recent work has clarified these areas beyond doubt.
In addition to sphingomylin, phosphatidylcholine is the most important representative of the phospholipids in the human body (EPLs = essential phospholipids). They are components of the cell membranes, and the transportation mechanism for fat in blood with lipoproteins serving as transporting proteins is well known. When processing soy beans to soybean oil, soyalecithin arises as spin-off; said soyalecithin is a phosphatidylcholine with the same molecular structure as human phosphatidylcholine. Research found a way to develop “Lipostabil” today approved and registered in Germany and 53 other countries.
Dr. Sam Baxas, Medical Center Binningen, Switzerland, developed the formula and achieved enormous successes in the field of atherosclerosis with this medicament – called “X-Plaque” there – by dissolving fat substances in the blood vessels.
Phosphatidylcholine has been used for 15 years now for intravenous treatment of cholesterol disorders.
