About the Dermaroller
Dermacare Dermaroller ( for home use model C-8)
Are you really happy with the results of your skincare, or do you think they could be better?
Below is information on the Dermacare Dermaroller for home use model C-8. For information on the medical rollers for professional use only click on the link
Do you know that only minor fractions (maximum 0.3% !!!) of the active substance of your favourite cream, gel or lotion can penetrate the surface of your skin? and that the majority of it - 99.7% – is wasted in your towel, pillow or cotton-pads, etc. No doubt that's an expensive daily experience! The active ingredients in your face creams don't really penetrate deeply enough to be super effective with the usual application.
The poor penetration characteristic of your cream is a natural physiological reaction of your skin, and known by all experts. BUT if you wish to benefit much more from your cosmetics and their ingredients, and if you wish to overcome the epidermal barrier to enhance the active substances into the deeper skin layers – we have the best possible solution: The Dermacare Dermaroller™.
Scientists have proven the efficacy of the Dermacare Dermaroller beyond any doubt: The Dermacare Dermaroller enhances up to 40 times more substances compared to normal topical creaming.
The Dermacare Dermaroller™ is a breakthrough device, simple in concept but yielding magnificent results. It is considered to be the modern-day magic wand of skin care.
The Dermacare Dermaroller™ C-8 (Cosmetic type), consists of a 12cm handle at the end of which lies a cylinder, like a small paint-roller, of 2cm diameter and 2cm length. On the surface of the cylinder, 24 circular arrays of 8 needles each (total 192 needles) are found, with a needle length of only 0.13mm (130 µm).
Rolling the cylinder on the skin surface creates micro-channels on the stratum corneum, through which any kind of substance applied on the skin will gain access to the deeper and viable skin layers. The size is of the needles is more than enough to pierce the stratum corneum and allow an increase in absorption of almost 10,000-fold compared to simple application to skin, but are small enough to be absolutely painless on the skin.
The treatment is free of pain. Negative side-effects are unknown.

- Quality assured: ISO 9001: 2000 approved
Once more we would like to point out that the Dermacare Dermaroller is only a tool to enhance the penetration of active substances in skin care products into deeper skin layers. If these substances have a real effect, as claimed by the manufacturer, then it will show. If not? – A change of the brand should be considered.
But keep in mind: you aren't going to get a sophisticated, highly effective product for a few pennies at your neighborhood drug store; and, to the contrary, just because a product is the most expensive one in the highest price boutique doesn't mean it is the best for you.
Since the year 2000 the Dermaroller gradually conquered the international market, and since then they've received plaudits and enthusiastic recommendations from all over the world.
Use of the Dermaroller™
The use of the Dermaroller (home-use model C-8) is easy and simple. The treatment with the Dermaroller for the enhancement of active substances is pain-free. The appropriate substance is applied in a thin layer, and “rolled” into the skin. Only a medium pressure should initially be applied but this can be varied according to the individual sensitivity. All scientific data are based on a 10 to 15 times rolling of the same skin area. In this case around 240 micro-infiltration-pores per square centimetre are set. These pores close within minutes.
The uppermost skin-layer, the epidermis, is a brick-like structure of scales. The micro-needles only push them aside, forming tiny micro-pores. While the Dermaroller rolls over the skin the previous applied substance (cosmetics only) is transported into the deeper skin layers. Parallel to this action the stratum corneum acts like a longterm depot to retain the active substance.

What is the Dermacare Dermaroller?
The Dermaroller is a device for the enhanced infiltration of active substances!
A quick look through the skin
The epidermis is the upper layer of the skin protecting the lower dermis against influences from outside. Without the epidermis a human would be not viable. It is the last protection wall for the dermis against intruding bacteria, dirt and other environmental influences, including the active ingredients of many skin-care products. It is just 0,10 to 0,15 mm thick, like a plastic packing foil, and consists of more or less transparent horny scales. The lowest epidermal layer, the basal layer, constantly produces these scales of the entire epidermis in a cycle of 28 to 30 days. They move from bottom to top forming there the very last epidermal layer, called stratum corneum . Although that layer is just about 0,01 mm in thickness it is very resistant. Therefore it also is called the epidermal barrier. The stratum corneum prevents the intrusion of foreign substances, and cosmetics and pharmaceutical active substances belong to them. The penetration capability of the best cosmetic liposomes through the epidermal barrier is just 0,3% (also see the studies of the University of Marburg/Germany on this website).
Does the Dermacare Dermaroller damage the skin?
NO! Negative side-effects were never reported. All types of Dermarollers penetrate the stratum corneum (top skin layer) , where tiny needles form infiltration channels for a very short while. The extreme slim needle-tips push the scales of the epidermis only aside, but they do not destroy them. The infiltration channels are closed in less than an hour. It's a fact that the sharp razor blades remove part of the stratum corneum but there are no reports that the thousands of years old procedure of ‘shaving' has any negative effect to the skin.
Can the Dermaroller improve the effect of substances?
Definitely yes! The studies of the University of Marburg have proven beyond any doubt the enhancement capabilities of the Dermaroller. What remains is the question if the substance has the effect the producer claims to have. The Dermacare Dermaroller (C-8 for the infiltration of substances) is only a tool for enhancement, like the garden-tool to air a lawn from the moss. If a drug or substance has a definite effect, it can be enhanced with the Dermaroller into the deeper skin layers. In this case the active substance moves faster and in bigger quantities to the dermis.
If the skin-care product contains no actively effective ingredients,
the Dermacare Dermaroller will not have as pronounced an effect.
Is it possible to infiltrate foreign-collagen into the skin?
Usually purified collagen from cows is injected into the skin by fine syringes. Beforehand an allergy-test has to be performed. Within 3 to 6 month the body degrades this foreign body totally. For that reason it would not make sense to enhance cow collagen with the Dermaroller into deeper tissues. (In times of BSE it is not recommended to transplant foreign collagen into the human skin).
Better and far more lasting is the induction of body own collagen with the CIT-Dermaroller.
How Often can the Dermacare Dermaroller (model C-8 for home-use) be used?
The Dermaroller C-8 only sets penetration channels into the epidermis. It can be used repeatedly for several hundred times, and can be used daily without any harm to the skin. But with time, even the strongest needle point will lose its sharpness. When this happens, the Dermaroller should be replaced. Even the best razorblade or the best scalpel will loose its sharpness sometimes. This is a fact!
How long should you roll?
The ‘needling' or ‘rolling' with the Dermaroller is not determined by time! Important alone are the numbers of roll-movements over a certain skin-area. Ten (10) roll-movements set 160 pricks per square centimetre (15 times about 240 pricks). THIS NUMBER IS ABSOLUTELY SUFFICIENT! For the rolling of a forehead one needs not more than five (5) minutes. When an entire face is ‘rolled' it will take not more than 5 minutes. The same time is required for the neck and the décolleté.
How should I roll?
With your free hand hold the skin under slight tension. Place the Dermaroller on the skin and roll with a constant movement to the end of the skin area. Roll horizontally, vertically and diagonal. Lift the Dermaroller slightly or change the angle of rolling and move back to the beginning. This ensures (more theoretically) that you will not hit the same prick channel. Start counting the roller-movements until the procedure becomes a routine.
What Pressure is required to handle the Dermaroller?
Apply a medium pressure only. Even when pressed hard to the skin the needles will not penetrate any deeper. The surface of the roller is always the limit.
What is the collagen Induction therapy (in short: CIT)?
The human body reacts to any injury to close it as fast as possible, as tiny it may be. This wound-closure is done by various growth factors forming a connective tissue (fibrosis) in form of collagen fibres. A tiny prick is not very dramatic, but the picture changes when thousands of needle pricks are set close to each other. The collagene fibres become confluent, forming a new tissue layer. To a certain extent this new collagen formation will compensate the loss of tissue layers caused by age. The CIT with the Dermaroller has no negative side effects compared with laser resurfacing or acid-peeling.
The laser-beam or acids used for peeling do nothing else than setting a 2nd degree burn on the dermis, by evaporating the epidermis at the same time. The dermis reacts to these damages as it does to all injuries. These methods with the totally removed epidermis have many side effects, such as: long lasting healing up to six month and more, high sun-sensitivity for many month, risk of pigmentation problems, scars, and so on.
How often the CIT should be performed?
The formation of new collagen-fibres and a new tissue needs time! In any way a result can finally be judged earliest after eight to twelve weeks. Then it can be decided if the treatment should be repeated. One or two CIT per years are absolutely sufficient (often and more is not always better).
When can I appear in public after a CIT?
Shortly after the commencement of the treatment the skin will more or less start to get red. This redness, depending on the type of skin, will quickly disappear after 2 to 3 days. Hours after the treatment the prick channels in the epidermis are definitely closed. There are no objections to cover the redness 24 hours after the CIT with the appropriate camouflage cosmetics. In any case make sure they do not contain substances irritating your skin additionally. Best advice: wait some days and the redness will disappear by itself.
Can scars be treated?
Scar treatment belongs into the hands of an experienced professional. In many cases the needles of a CIT-Dermaroller are sufficient to soften acne scars. Bigger scars caused by accidents and/or operations must be treated in general with the special Dermaroller MS-4. They often have a stringent, hard tissue. The scar-roller has special hardened needles they perforate the scar tissue easily (like a meat tenderiser) without becoming dull. The scars become softer, less elevated and in most cases re-pigmentated.
Is there a treatment for acne-scars?
Definitely YES ! In 2003 Dr. Philippa McCaffrey discovered the tremendous potential of the Dermaroller-model MS-4 for the treatment of atrophic acne-scars. We would like to express our thanks to her devoted work.
Can stretch-marks be treated with the Dermaroller?
Several MDs recently reported good results in treating stretch-marks with the Dermaroller (model MF-8 and MS-4). The skin surface becomes smooth again, and the scar tissue softens. We shall keep you informed about further progress.
Where and when should the Dermaroller not be used?
The Dermaroller should NOT be used on pustular acne lesions, active herpes outbreaks, or any other acute infection or inflammation of the skin. If you are in doubt of your skin condition do not hesitate to consult your MD. Do not use the Dermaroller on children or animals! Keep it out of the reach of children.
